SECTION F2: EHS Listserves

Introduction

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) facilitates three electronic mailing lists for the University community. Individuals subscribed to the list may send e-mail to the software that manages the list (called the LISTPROC) and it will redistribute the mail to all subscribers.

The three lists are: SAFETYLINE, Lab Supervisors, and Waste Paper. The purpose of SAFETYLINE is to facilitate better communication between EHS and individuals with responsibilities for and/or interest in health and safety issues. The list is used by EHS to distribute interesting articles, information, training schedules and notices and to initiate discussions about various issues. Subscribers may use SAFETYLINE to pose questions to EHS or get input from other Safety Managers and interested individuals on health and safety matters (e.g., how do other departments incorporate safety training for undergraduates, etc.).

The Lab Supervisors list includes safety managers in science and engineering departments, principal investigators with laboratories, laboratory managers and others in labs who have been assigned safety responsibilities. Topics discussed on this listserve are focused on laboratory-related issues.

The Waste Paper listserve provides a means for delivering the monthly hazardous waste newsletter to individuals or representatives of groups that produce hazardous wastes.

Scope and Application

Subscribers to the listserves must be affiliated with Princeton University. All EHS personnel, departmental Safety Managers and departmental safety committee members are subscribed to the SAFETYLINE automatically. All individuals who have been through the Laboratory Supervisor Training are automatically subscribed to the Lab Supervisors and the Waste Paper lists. Any other interested individuals may subscribe to any of the lists at the discretion of EHS.

Description

In order to participate in the on-line discussion group, one must follow procedures to subscribe to the list and send correspondence. Please note that there are two different e-mail addresses involved in the discussion group. Listproc@lists.princeton.edu is used for administrative functions, such as subscribing, setting mail options and requesting lists of subscribers. Regular correspondence is sent to the individual list, namely SAFETYLINE@lists.princeton.edu, LabSupervisors@lists.princeton.edu or WastePaper@lists.princeton.edu.

Subscribing to the listserves.

Only individuals subscribed to the particular listserve will receive correspondence. To subscribe, send the following message to listproc@lists.princeton.edu:

SUBSCRIBE Listname YourName

To be removed from the list, send the following message to listproc@lists.princeton.edu:

UNSUBSCRIBE Listname YourName

where Listname is the name of the list (SAFETYLINE, LabSupervisors or WastePaper) and YourName is the full name of the person subscribing, not an e-mail address.

Sending and Receiving Mail

To send a message for distribution to the list subscribers, send e-mail to the appropriate address: safetyline@lists.princeton.edu, LabSupervisors@lists.princeton.edu or WastePaper@lists.princeton.edu.

When replying to an e-mail message from the listserve using the Reply function of the e-mail software, the reply will automatically go to sender, not the entire list. The sender may forward the reply to the entire list at his or her discretion.

Mail Options

To receive a list of all individuals subscribed to the listserve, send the following message to Listproc@lists.princeton.edu:

REVIEW ListName SUBSCRIBERS

where ListName is the name of the list (SAFETYLINE, LabSupervisors or WastePaper)

A list of all unconcealed subscribers will be forwarded within minutes.
