SECTION
19: Laboratory Design and Organization
One of the most effective ways of controlling exposure to radiation,
particularly exposure to internally deposited radioisotopes, is through
proper design and organization of the laboratory.
Design and Planning (top)
Departments and "Authorized Users" planning new construction
or renovations of facilities to be used for the storage or use of "Sources
of Radiation" should obtain the advice of the "Health
Physicist" as
early as possible, preferably in the planning stage.
Organization (top)
A laboratory in which "Sources of Radiation" are to be used
or stored should be carefully organized, and consideration should be
given to keeping it physically and operationally separate from personnel
and functions which are not involved with the "Sources of Radiation".
Establishing a laboratory for the use of "Sources of Radiation" in
the corner of an ordinary laboratory as an afterthought is strongly discouraged.
Such an action is acceptable only if the activity with "Sources
of Radiation" is and will remain at a low level, and if all persons
having access to the laboratory are thoroughly oriented. The best time
to develop an organizational plan is prior to the application for authorization
for radioisotopes or prior to obtaining authorization for radioisotopes
or prior to obtaining authorization for a "Radiation
Producing Machine or Device". The "Health
Physicist" should be consulted
at the earliest possible time for advice on organization.
